Having Equity

in a Home

Your Pot Of Gold - Home Equity
L. Sampson

Having equity in your home is a good way to make sure you
always have a cushion for that rainy day that may lie ahead.
The equity in your home is greatly dependant upon the area in
which you live and the other homes that reside around you but
there are still elements that you can control to increase your
homes value.

It takes a lot of careful consideration and planning to make
improvements to your home that will make a difference. The
number one mistake people make when trying to build equity in
their homes is to add on immaculate details without taking into
account the type of home they have, and the location of where
they live. If you live in an area filled with modest sized
homes, average sized rooms and a decent lot sizes, it would not
benefit you in any way to add extravagant fixtures, large
add-ons and a huge below ground pool in the backyard. No matter
what the additions, if they don’t flow with your neighborhood or
if they exceed the other homes around you to a large degree, you
aren’t going to get back your investment.

Safe additions to consider are good flooring such as hardwoods,
quality carpet, or other natural options such as jute or bamboo.
The wall coverings you choose should also be up to par. A fresh
paint job, wood paneling, or natural fibers on the walls are
great additions and can be inexpensive. Updated kitchens and
bathrooms are always a good idea but be careful not to go
overboard on extravagant extras that may not fit the area in
which you live or the style of home you have. In cases where
you desire to do additions to your home, like extra rooms or
extensions to existing rooms, it is always wise to consult a
contractor.

Keeping these tips in mind will help you reap the maximum
equity potential in your home.
